Sisters Catherine and Tatiana Colon are the newest additions to George Eddy Drive. The sisters, along with their husbands, Claudio and Hector, are making their dreams of homeownership a reality through the self-help housing program at NWBRV. The program helps families purchase a home by actually having them build their own homes. Their labor dramatically reduces the cost of the property, making it affordable.
While 15 of the planned 30 homes on George Eddy Drive are spoken for, the Colons will be the first relatives living on the street. Originally from Puerto Rico, the sisters grew up in a tight-knit community. Their childhood memories involve family gatherings and growing up playing with cousins and visiting aunts and uncles. When they moved to Rhode Island , they came with the goal of one day living close by once again.
As luck would have it, both families learned of the Self Help Housing program and qualified as two of the eight families selected to build their homes during round II of the project. During our Welcome to the neighborhood celebration, each family got to pick their lot number from a hat. When it came time for Catherine to reveal her lot number she smiled and turned to her sister an asked “what number did you get Tatiana?” At that moment they realized their lots were right next to each other.
