On a daily basis, I am afforded the opportunity to see customers enter the HomeOwnership Center excited to begin their journey of purchasing a home. NWBRV’s financial coaches work tirelessly to ensure that all customers are empowered in their purchase from creating a budget to post-purchase follow up.
Read below to learn how Cynthia Senquiz and her husband Pedro Perez used knowledge as their buying power with the help of Felicia Diaz, one of our financial coaches.
“My husband and I were paying too much rent for where we were living. In February 2016, decided to become homeowners and my brother referred us to Felicia Diaz, the homeownership coach at NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley who had helped him to buy his first home.
When we went in to speak with Felicia, she interviewed us, pulled a credit report, and provided advice on the process. She encouraged us to continue forward with our plans to become homeowners and provided us with the information on an upcoming First Time Home Buyers Education Course.
At first, we didn’t understand why it was necessary to take any classes since we already had information from the bank and from the City of Woonsocket about the Down Payment Assistance Program. In reality we did not want to attend the class at all.
But then, during the class, we met other families that, like us, dreamed of owning their first home. The classes were dynamic and informative. We learned about the buying process and about all the necessary documents that we had to keep in mind during the process and at closing.
When we got home from the first class we realized that we didn’t know anything about what it took to purchase a home and that the classes were very much needed. This realization was a wake-up call to a new world of knowledge. When it was time for the second and last session of the class we were very excited and eager to learn. It truly is worth it to take these classes; the knowledge and experience is unlike any other.
At the end of the two sessions we realized that we didn’t know as much as we thought, and that all the new information would help us in the process that would follow. During the next few months, we found a real estate agent and soon thereafter we found a home that we fell in love with. We had a few hiccups along the way after we put an offer on the house, but during the entire process we had the support and advice of Felicia. She became like a mentor for us.
After several months of uncertainty, in June 2016, we finally became homeowners in the City of Woonsocket.
This process was a great experience for us, since at first we had no idea about the work and knowledge required to become homeowners. Thanks to the time, patience, and knowledge of Felicia and the team at the Homeownership Center of NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley our dream has become a reality.”
