We’re so lucky at NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley to have a staff of hardworking, committed team-players who work tirelessly at our mission of building affordable housing and enriching community life.
In this series, you’ll get to know the people behind the work.
Tell us about yourself.
I’m a native Woonsocket Rocket, born and raised! I was brought up in the 1970’s, graduated from Woonsocket High School and went through some trade school.
One of the reasons I like NeighborWorks is my connection to Woonsocket and its people. I used to know everybody here. When I was growing up, if somebody came to town, you knew it– that’s how small we were! Now there are so many different backgrounds, communities, and types of people who have moved into the area. It’s amazing how Woonsocket has evolved. However, while the town has evolved, the people who run the town are still the same. This is one reason I dedicate my time to working with the young people of Woonsocket. I want them to know that they have power and to learn how they can use their power to take on leadership roles and impact the community they live in.
What do you do at NWBRV?
I work as a financial coach in the HomeOwnership Center. I help people look at the goal of home ownership, analyze their credit, and then help them build the assets necessary to move forward with buying. Often people are under the impression that they can’t easily buy a home if they fall into a low to moderate income bracket. They don’t realize buying a house is credit driven. I help them clean up their credit and get organized to save the money they need for their deposit.
I love working with people. If someone is interested in purchasing their first home, I encourage them to visit our website. It tells you a lot about us and they’ll be able to gather a lot of the necessary information. People can navigate the process online through one of our coaches or utilize eHome America at their own leisure through NWBRV. Home buyer classes are ongoing all of the time.
If you or someone you know is interested in purchasing a home or getting some support with your finances, please feel free to reach out. I love supporting new clients and assisting them in reaching their goals (email@example.com; 401-257-6129)
How long have you been working with NWBRV, and how did you start working with the organization?
I started working with the youth program and consulting with NWBRV director, Joe Garlick in 2003. The youth program at St. James Baptist Church collaborated with NeighborWorks and we were able to bring the kids from both programs together as a community. When an opportunity opened up in the Homeownership Center, I attending training to become a financial coach. I was a full time employee by 2005 and have been with the organization for about 18 years.
What is your proudest accomplishment during your time with NWBRV?
I’m always so proud watching someone go from just thinking about being a homeowner to owning a home. It’s so important to be conscious of what’s going on in your community and to act in a way that benefits those around you. There’s beauty in watching someone grow their assets to be able to become a homeowner.
Another one of my greatest accomplishments was helping an individual who came in thinking they wanted to buy a home. However as we worked together, they realized they really just wanted to go to college! It’s about allowing the person to tell me what their need is and me figuring out how to best help them.
What inspires you to do this work?
One of the things I like most about NeighborWorks, and what has inspired me to work here, is that we do a lot of work based around racial equality. Our Executive Director Joe has always done a lot with cleaning up neighborhoods and helping low to moderate income families acquire housing. That work drew me to NWBRV.
What an asset it is to have such a dedicated financial coach on the NWBRV team. Check back for insights into other NWBRV staff and board members.
