Our seniors residing at The Meadows, an independent living community located in North Smithfield, Rhode Island, are consistently provided with engagement opportunities. We are thrilled to be currently offering “Armchair Travel” opportunities to our residents!

“The Meadows enjoys a rich Canadian culture of residents,” Resident Service Coordinator Lucy Goulet shared. “It was a time to celebrate the Canadian heritage.”
From enjoying Canadian cuisine and singing the Canadian National Anthem, to a French song sing-a-long (Aloutte included!) and a virtual tour of Canada, our wonderful residents were truly immersed in the Canadian experience.
“One of our residents who originated from Canada, Rejean ‘Reggie’ Langlois, cooked up a Canadian stew and some wonderful pea soup,” Lucy said. “He volunteered his time for the residents to enjoy his cooking. Reggie told me that it takes almost 12 hours for the meal to be completed. We also enjoyed French meat pies and Crepes with Canadian maple syrup.”
An additional Canada Day highlight was focused on celebrating the islands of Newfoundland and Labrador. Meadows resident, Cindy Woods, shared that her Canadian family played a wonderfully supportive role during an integral and pivotal moment in United States history.

“We have a resident who was born in Newfoundland,” Lucy shared. “Newfoundland has an airport called Gander. On 911 when the United States was attacked, all incoming flights from Europe were diverted to Newfoundland and the Gander airport. The Newfoundlanders immediately went into action and welcomed the thousands of passengers who were now in unfamiliar and uncertain times. The Newfoundlanders fed, housed and took care of all the passengers without question. Our resident Cindy Woods, family was part of the welcoming community.”
“We were honored that Cindy took the time to put together some interesting facts about Newfoundland, surprising many of the group members in attendance,” Lucy continued. “We then watched the documentary of the play that was written and produced about the 911 event in Newfoundland called ‘Come from Away’. Everyone was in awe as they watched the documentary. We will now be streaming the play in the community room sometime next month.”

Upcoming Armchair Travel Events will be continuously posted in the Meadows monthly newsletter. Residents are also welcome to contact Lucy directly at 401-762-2333 or Lgoulet@nwbrv.org, or visit the main office to inquire about these fantastic events!
