Our seniors residing at The Meadows, an independent living community located in North Smithfield, Rhode Island, are consistently provided with engagement opportunities. We are thrilled to be currently offering “Armchair Travel” opportunities to our residents!

“We had a first armchair travel on October 4, 2024!” Meadows Resident Services Coordinator Lucy Goulet shared. “We explored the country of Greece. There were 65 residents who attended! The room was decorated in blue and white, complete with Greek flags table décor.”
The October event featured food catered by Providence Greek establishment, Souvlaki Zone. This phenomenal “Taste of Greece” spread included Greek salad, falafel, steak tip souvlaki, stuffed grape leaves, baklava, and spanakopita.
Residents have said that they really enjoyed learning of the food and culture of another country! They particularly loved the food samples that were chosen. Some loved learning a new dance too. It was a very uplifting event with music, food and virtual tours!

“The food was absolutely delicious!” Lucy added.
Greek music played throughout the duration of the events, fully immersing Meadows residents in their armchair travel experience!

One of our residents, who is of Greek descent, Deborah Carrol, demonstrated some Greek dance steps! We also provided some virtual tours of Greece on our large screen. We ended our event with the movie, ‘My big fat Greek Wedding’. A classic!

“Our next Armchair Travel Event will take place on January 22, 2025–and we’re headed to Canada!” Lucy elaborated on the relatively new program. “There will be a special designation for Newfoundland–the Island that welcomed all incoming passengers on 911. We will show a documentary of the event. We have a resident who is from Newfoundland who will give us her unique perspective on the Island country of Canada!”
Upcoming Armchair Travel Events will be continuously posted in the Meadows monthly newsletter. Residents are also welcome to contact Lucy directly at 401-762-2333 or Lgoulet@nwbrv.org, or visit the main office to inquire about these fantastic events!
Many residents are excited about our trip to Canada! I have a group of residents who are participating in an advisory group on the planning of the event. Most are eager to talk about their heritage and experience some of the food that has been part of their childhood.
