Another successfulAmeriCorps Week is in the books!
Every year at NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley we look forward to celebrating the tremendous impact that AmeriCorps service has had on our employees and organization. We’re incredibly fortunate to have such a rich history under our belt–from those who have served locally with the agency, to those who served elsewhere and brought their knowledge to NeighborWorks. We are thrilled to acknowledge some of our esteemed alum and communicate how invaluable AmeriCorps has been in helping NWBRV fulfill its mission.
From March 9th through March 15th, we specifically recognized the commitment of over 1.2 million Americans who have chosen to serve their country through AmeriCorps, with millions of others serving AmeriCorps Seniors and their community partners. We take time this week every year to thank all AmeriCorps members, alumni and area partners for their work. It’s because of their service that non-profit organizations, like NeighborWorks, have the opportunity to truly make a difference.
We’re taking a moment this month to sit down and chat with one of our most dedicated AmeriCorps members, Christa Abatiello, to hear about her journey with our program.
Christa, now halfway though her first year as an AmeriCorps member, came to us after having worked in human services for over ten years. Her experience helping a diverse population prepared her for her service time with the Women’s Development Corporation Housing Opportunities Corporation, where she’s diligently working towards her goal of becoming a certified resident service coordinator.
“In a short few months, I have learned so much as far about available services within the community,” Christa said of her time with AmeriCorps. “Being able to help the residents and work side-by-side with an amazing group of people has just opened up so many doors and opportunities for me.”
Christa elaborated on her experience with us here in Woonsocket, explaining that her familiarity with several common resident issues and resident service skills have become much stronger—including grant writing.

I’ve also been able to work closely with residents and assist in person with their current issues. Helping them with their peace and comfort is my highest priority.”

Since 1993, AmeriCorps has been dedicated to improving lives, strengthening communities, and fostering civic engagement by sending people and funding around the country to areas in need.

“The AmeriCorps Program has played an essential role in the growth of our organization. Today, five current staff members served as NWBRV AmeriCorps members. They have each shaped our programs and organization for the better in their own very unique ways. We are a better organization because of their service.”
NWBRV Executive Director, Joe Garlick
“Nationwide issues can feel abstract and overwhelming. AmeriCorps provides us with an opportunity to make a real difference on issues occurring in our own back yards,” said NWBRV Director of Resource Development and Communications and AmeriCorps alum Meg Rego. “AmeriCorps Week is an opportunity for us to recognize what united service can accomplish. Our organization has benefited massively from the impact of caring and dedicated AmeriCorps Members. Personally and professionally, my service year has shaped the way I live my life today.”
NeighborWorks Accessing Home AmeriCorps Program Manager Tyler Martin spoke enthisastically about his experience with AmeriCorps, highlighting the career opportunities that AmeriCorps exposed him to.
“I can confidently say that without having served with AmeriCorps I would never have pursued a career within the nonprofit sector, and ultimately would never have managed an AmeriCorps program,” Tyler said. “So many people at NeighborWorks speak very highly of the Accessing Home AmeriCorps program.”
So from us here at NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley, to all of you who have served or are currently serving nationwide with AmeriCorps. We see your dedication and we thank you for your commitment.
