Sometimes in life things don’t always go as planned. In the case of Loretta Johnson holding on to her faith was key in her journey to achieve her financial goals. Loretta was introduced to NeighborWorks through our partnership with the Central Falls Housing Authority Section 8 Program. It was during the More for your Money Workshop series taught by Rosalind Mitchell they began outlining a financial goal plan together.
Loretta Johnson’s journey is unique in the fact that she was determined to have more in life than to be labeled as a community statistic. She graduated from college, served as an AmeriCorps member and found a full-time job as the Constituent Organizer at the RI Coalition for the Homeless, all while caring for her five children, including one with special needs. She moved from homelessness to Section 8 housing and recently purchased her own home through her journey as a client with NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley.
While working with her financial and credit coach Rosalind, Loretta completed courses on budgeting, credit improvement, and goal setting which helped her improve her credit score by 60 points. She also created a pool of savings she would eventually use to purchase her own home. Loretta completed our Fast Track Homebuyer Education class prior to purchasing her duplex from a local Community Development Corporation. She is enrolled in our Landlord Training class, where she refreshed her knowledge and will be even more prepared to manage her new business as a landlord. Loretta and her family are now successful homeowners and landlords living in Northern RI.
