Our youth programs here at NWBRV routinely bring community-wide opportunities to our Woonsocket students–most notably this spring, our new High Impact Tutoring Program.
The program provides small groups of three to five students of similar academic levels consistent support twice a week for a total of 90 minutes. Offered four days a week at Villa Nova Middle School in Woonsocket, the program is available to all students, including those who are Multi Lingual Learners. Math tutoring will be available Mondays and Wednesday, with English tutoring available Tuesdays and Thursdays. Funded by a grant to WASC by RIDE, the new program is led by Gerina Auguste, a former school teacher with a dual bachelors in ELA and Education from Guilford College and Nadia Markos, a math teacher with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Ain Shams University.
“We want to thank Ms. Kim Luca, Villa Nova’s principal, for allowing NeighborWorks to partner with Villa Nova!” said NWBRV’s Director of Neighborhood Learning & Community Building Brandon Soum.
High impact tutoring has been proven to be 20 times more effective than standard tutoring models for math and 15 times more effective for reading. Results from this style of tutoring include higher graduation rates, reduced absenteeism and the ability to close up to half a year’s gap in learning. Studies have demonstrated that the practice increases students’ learning by an additional three to 15 months across grade levels.
The evidence is clear: high-impact tutoring works, and I’ve urged our nation’s schools to provide every student who is struggling with extended access to an effective tutor.”
Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona
The National Education Association has been promoting the benefits of this program—along with effective afterschool programs—since the height of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.
Because so many students have faced exacerbated inequities through and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. We are called to use every tool in our toolbox that is proven to work in order to ensure that resources and supports are directed to the students who need them the most.”
