While NWBRV’s HomeOwnership Center (HOC) team is looking forward to closing out another successful year, we couldn’t wait to share with you our latest project, as we continue to provide Rhode Islanders with an all encompassing, one-stop-shop for financial literacy, homeownership education and coaching!
This fall, we’ve been thrilled to introduce our new Financial Capability AmeriCorps program! From now through August, 2025, two AmeriCorps members will serve 40 hours per week within our HomeOwnership Center. These members will be providing group and one-on-one financial capability coaching, in an effort to support the overall financial well being of low to moderate income individuals in Northern Rhode Island.
“The year one goal of this new HOC program is to serve 510 individuals with enough financial capability education that they feel an invigorated sense of empowerment and financial confidence,” NWBRV’s Meg Rego explained. “In addition, the AmeriCorps members will leverage 20 volunteers to aid in providing the financial education necessary to achieve this goal.”
The participating AmeriCorps members will conduct regular financial education workshops, covering budgeting, credit management, savings strategies, understanding mortgages, and avoiding foreclosure.
“These members will utilize interactive activities and real-life examples to make the workshops engaging and practical,” Meg continued. “The workshops will also include Homebuyer Education Courses facilitated with a member of NWBRV’s HUD-certified counseling team!”
Participants can expect their experience to cover all aspects of the homebuying process–everything from mortgage readiness, credit analysis and home selection, to financing options, closing procedures, and post-purchase responsibilities.
“A huge benefit of this is that it’s a personalized program,” Meg elaborated. “AmeriCorps members will work closely with clients to deep dive into their own personal financial situations.”
After establishing a realistic grasp on each individual participant’s financial situation, our AmeriCorps members will then work to develop personalized budget and savings plans with each individual.
“Participants will ideally leave this program with an extremely clear understanding of their own finances, and find themselves solidly on a path towards financial clarity and success,” Meg said. “Ongoing support and guidance will also be available upon completion!”
