Who’s ready to take their creativity to new heights this summer? NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley is excited to announce that during our ten week Levitt AMP Woonsocket Music Series, concert attendees, music enthusiasts and our incredible community members will be able to truly watch Music Move.
From June 14th through August 23rd, Levitt attendees will be able to partake in the creative joy of a Music Moves creation hub, which will be stationed in front of the massive 8′ x 8′ Music Moves Cube, designed by youth at RiverzEdge Arts. Using shared, provided materials and various prompts–what do you love about Woonsocket, what do you love about the Community, and Music Moves–Levitt attendees will be invited to draw what music means to them, and contribute their art work to our ever changing display of community art work.
“People are receiving the project very positively – especially the kiddos!” Art Cube Coordinator Jaliyah Joseph said. “On Friday I had so many kids stop by the Art Cube very eager to draw and even get their hands dirty by pasting their own drawing onto the cube! It was so amazing to see the smiles on their faces after their drawings were completed and on the cube. ’Many people chose the music prompt and drew things related to music. One little girl who I believe was only seven, wrote ‘Music is Freedom.'”
Funded by the RI Foundation as part of their Community Grant, Music Moves will pop up at all 10 of our Levitt shows, as well as three off-site events. After the 10 week series, the cube is flattened and stored until it can be reused with a new prompt next year.
The Woonsocket community is beautifully diverse in every aspect of the word,” NeighborWorks Director of Communications Meg Rego expressed. “This diversity permeates the City through the languages spoken, cultural traditions, and the free, live music options our residents enjoy. ‘Music Moves’ is designed to bring the entirety of the Woonsocket community, people of all ages, races, backgrounds, abilities, languages, incomes, and interests together through the powerful equalizers of free, live music and creative expression.”
Many participating adults have expressed how they think the cube is very cool–the look of their art is so different from the kids. I think it’s particularly amazing to see how and what different age groups draw–even some drawings representing community based organizations and institutions. These drawings being all together on one cube, to me, signifies a certain kind of unity, which I believe serves as a testament to exactly what Levitt is all about. In my opinion I believe this Art Cube says that Woonsocket is youthful, creative, and passionate. The arts bring something special out of the Woonsocket community, which we’ve seen time and time again with community response to each Levitt performance. To have an art cube that can make this feeling of unity and love into something visual is just awesome.”
