Music to My Ears: An Acoustical Engineering Challenge

October 4, 2015 by Thea Lowe

The NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley Youth Programs have been chosen to pilot a new program called Music to My Ears: An Acoustical Engineering Challenge.  The curriculum provides innovative lesson plans for grades 3–5 where kids solve music problems using engineering skills, creativity and teamwork.  As a pilot educator, we receive a free educator guide plus all the materials needed for hands-on engineering activities which can otherwise be a costly investment.  The program is part of the Engineering Adventures at the Museum of Science in Boston and will be offered at the Art Center from October 8 until November 26.

Engineering Adventures

Engineering Adventures is a curriculum created especially for kids in grades 3 – 5 in out-of-school time programs.  To-date, they have seven different curriculums with fun, hands-on engineering design challenges. To produce the activities, they use a rigorous design cycle involving development, testing and evaluation much like a true engineering design process.  The development team tests the curriculums in after school programs, like ours, and evaluate their success to see if the plan works well, meets educational goals, and are engaging. Once tested and revised, the curriculum is piloted yet again for a final round of revisions and is then released for sale to youth programs and educators.  This will be the second pilot that NWBRV Youth Programs has participated in, the first was their Recycled Racers program, where students built cars out of recycled materials.
