The Levitt Foundation believes that all people should have access to the arts –no matter their background –and that music transcends boundaries, bringing people together for an experience that builds community and celebrates our shared humanity. We’re proud partners of NeighborWorks and Woonsocket!”Victoria A. Bridenstine, Director of Programs, Levitt Foundation
If this doesn’t sum up the overarching meaning behind the Levitt AMP Woonsocket Music Series, we don’t know what does. Here at NWBRV, we’d like to formally acknowledge and highlight the impact that the Levitt Foundation has had on our community. As the lead funder and impetus behind the series, the Levitt Foundation pulls out all the stops to help build community and transform underutilized public spaces.
Employing every resource available to them, including grants and research, the nationally recognized Levitt Foundation focuses on spreading free, live music to communities; simultaneously highlighting each individual city’s local pride and cultures while helping to foster equitable and healthy neighborhoods. Today, the Levitt Foundation is partnering with seven music venues in larger metro areas and 20 Levitt AMP communities in small to mid-sized towns and cities across the country. In 2022, Levitt will support over 500 concerts that will host over 750,000 concertgoers.
“We believe that public spaces are places where everyone feels they belong, regardless of their background circumstances,” Victoria said. “Public spaces are key to equitable, thriving, and sustainable communities, which is why we support projects that activate underused public spaces to create inclusive and vibrant music-filled community hubs.”
NeighborWorks, the city of Woonsocket, and our incredible community members, collectively feel so fortunate that our city and its wonderful, involved people were recognized by Levitt. Without their funding, the city’s beloved concert series wouldn’t have been made possible year after year.
“We were excited to receive an application from NeighborWorks, an organization that actively engages in building strong communities and supporting neighborhood life,” Victoria said. “We learned of Woonsocket’s need and desire to bring people of diverse backgrounds together to an underused public space and to help revitalize a once bustling corridor. The Levitt AMP Music Series would support the momentum that had already begun in Woonsocket.”
NeighborWorks would also like to extend our recognition to the people of Rhode Island and the Woonsocket area. The Levitt grant was also made possible by every community member who took the time to vote, year after year, for the concert series. Without your enthusiasm and dedication to free, live music, the series would never have become a reality.
“During the application online voting period, the people of Rhode Island expressed their true excitement for the series in their community,” Victoria added. “We’re thrilled about the impact the Levitt AMP Music Series has had in Woonsocket–families are enjoying tremendous musical talent, the public space continues to be activated, the local economy has benefited and collaborations with nonprofits and other community partners are constant. We love to see it!”
Back Rhodes, a progressive country band with a side of Americana Rock, will take the stage at 6pm Friday, with Curley Taylor following at 7:30.
Louisiana native Curley Taylor will bring his bluesy, soulful vocals and the band’s hard driving Zydeco beat blend to the Levitt stage, creating high-energy dance music for all audiences. Curley’s music is true to its roots in Zydeco and Blues, but contemporary enough to appeal to a broad range of music lovers. Curley Taylor & Zydeco Trouble tour extensively throughout the US, performing at festivals and clubs from New York to San Diego and from Florida to Seattle. Often playing to audiences who have never heard Zydeco music before, they make fans wherever they go–and we know that Woonsocket this Friday will be no exception!
This year’s free and family friendly Levitt AMP Woonsocket Music Series isn’t JUST about the music!
While the acts range in musical genres-from Pop and Reggae to Americana and Zydeco-concert attendees will also be treated throughout the summer to a variety of additional artisans, celebrations, food and events! The series, complete with food trucks, local craft vendors, and an on-site bar provided by Ciro’s Tavern, will occur Friday nights from June 17 through August 19 at River Island Art Park in Woonsocket.
Each Monday throughout the summer, we’ll be highlighting a weekly participant or event that will make this sweet summer series that much sweeter!
Tune in next week to see what we have on deck at the
Levitt AMP Woonsocket Music Series!
