NWBRV to Screen the Movie ELLIS at C3 Center

October 26, 2015 by Ainsley Morisseau-Cantoral

NWBRV was selected as one of many viewing sites for the film ELLIS.  The organization and its youth programs join artists, activists, educators and passionate individuals across the country hosting screening installation events from November 9th to 16th.

About ELLIS

ELLIS awakens our collective memory, taking you back to the early years of Ellis Island through the experience of one immigrant. Set in the abandoned Ellis Island Hospital complex and using JR’s UNFRAMED art installations, ELLIS tells the forgotten story of the immigrants who built America. It is the story of the ghosts of our countries past, the individuals who fled poverty, discrimination, and dictatorships, for a chance at a new life and eerily foreshadows the plight of those who currently seek the same opportunities and safety in this country and other parts of the world.  The short narrative film stars Academy Award® Winner Robert De Niro, is written by Academy Award®winner Eric Roth, and is directed by the artist JR.

Woonsocket Screening

Community Builder-in-Residence, Ellie Brown, brought the film to Woonsocket and is coordinating the viewing.  When asked why she thought the C3 Center would be a good screening site, Ellie replied “I’ve been struck by the stories of recent and historical immigration in Woonsocket. I am especially interested in learning the stories from the kids and families that we serve, as these stories contribute to the diverse fiber of our community.  Additionally, I’m always looking to expose our kids to new ideas and to see art used in non-traditional ways.”  She went on to add ” The content seems relevant because everyone comes from somewhere else. Whether it’s Canada, Senegal, Liberia, Puerto Rico, Europe, Jamaica, etc., we all have a story of immigration in our family histories. Part of the screening will include a conversation to share stories and learn from each other. I do believe that there’s a genuine desire to hear each others stories and share our own. Any platform that encourages us to get to know our neighbors in a new way is a good one.”

The screening will be held Wednesday, November 18th from 6-8pm at the C3 Center (view event details in our calendar).  All our welcome to attend.  You can also participate in the conversation online using the hashtag #ELLISstory.
