With Hurricane Joaquin looming off the coastline and rain eminent for the next few days, it is time to think about protecting your home. Rain damage can be costly but is avoidable. Here are a few small steps you can take now to protect your home from water damage during heavy rains.
- Inspect your roof. A leaky roof can cause major damage and is often not seen until it is too late (insulation in your attic can get wet, mold and rot soon follow). Don’t wait for a water spot on the ceiling. Instead, have your roof checked by a reputable contractor and make any necessary repairs.
- Trim your trees. As the wind gusts pick up, so will the likelihood for falling branches and limbs. Prevent broken windows and damaged roofing but trimming back trees and bushes, especially those which are dead or unhealthy.
- Clean your gutters. Patch leaks and clear debris such as leaves to ensure that your gutters move water away from your house efficiently and effectively.
- Secure outdoor tools/furniture. You will also want to bring in items that may get moldy or rusted from being outside.
- Check for cracks and leaks in your foundation. Add a sump pump if your space is prone to flooding and prop items such as appliances, furniture, and boxes on cinder blocks to keep them above water.
- Document Your Possessions. Photograph and inventory your rooms so that if damage does occur, the insurers processing your claim have sufficient evidence to warrant full coverage.
Finally, no matter if you are a homeowner or renter, make sure to have a comprehensive insurance policy in place to protect your home and belongings from rain damage. For more tips and tools on managing your home, visit our HomeOwnership Center.
