The NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley’s Sure Track to College team is proud to provide personalized guidance to high school and college aged students, helping turn their dreams into tangible realities.
The program, run by a highly dedicated team of individuals including NWBRV’s C3 Center Site Coordinator Nwando Ofokansi, prepares students for the future by devising long term goals and providing the instrumental small steps necessary to achieve them. For many students in communities like Woonsocket, the Sure Track to College program fills a crucial gap in the education system by providing the one-on-one support necessary to help students identify and work towards their personal goals.
What I love about the Sure Track to College program is that there is something for every student. Each student has had a unique set of experiences, skills, and goals.”Nwando Ofokansi
Through education, mentoring, and coaching, high school and college aged Northern Rhode Island students are provided the specific age-appropriate resources, tools, and action steps that they need to further their educational careers. While ninth grade students are thinking broadly about their futures, seniors are submitting applications for college, job training programs, and scholarships. These step-specific needs are consistently met on a highly personalized level, culminating in high school graduates receiving ongoing mentorship, ensuring they’re ready to tackle higher education or launch their careers.
For students who don’t fit a “traditional” mold, the Sure Track to College program has the unique ability to reinvigorate a student’s mindset and revitalize their beliefs in themselves. Nwando shared one of her favorite program success stories, of a struggling high school junior. With the help of the programs’s individualized tutoring and college prep mentoring, the student went from failing nearly every class their first two years of high school, to making the Dean’s List in their first semester of college.
“We had a student who started the program as a high school junior, after having been in the hospital for almost the entirety of their sophomore year,” Nwando shared. “Having missed so much school, college felt so unrealistic, and the student was discouraged from applying to four-year colleges. With the the support of the Sure Track Program, they went on to apply to several schools, and now the student will be graduating from a four year college this May!”
With the ever-increasing costs of higher education creating a significant barrier for low-income students, we at NWBRV recognize that financial aid and scholarships alone are not enough for our students to access and succeed in college. With the help of area partners like CVS, who made a generous grant contribution to the program this year, we are able to meet many other financial needs that often deter students from pursuing higher education.
The Sure Track to College program is immeasurably grateful for the financial support that allows us to provide these resources to our students.”Nwando Ofokansi
Thanks to CVS, NWBRV will be able to bring students on college tours, provide SAT and ACT prep courses, and send each graduating senior off to school with the tools needed for success.
