The Meadows Meditates!

May 2, 2024 by Holly Abney

Our seniors residing at The Meadows, an independent living community located in North Smithfield, Rhode Island, are consistently provided with engagement opportunities. And 2024 has not only brought excitement and celebration to the Senior Living development–it’s also delivered our very own brand of NWBRV zen with Meditation Mondays (and now Wednesdays too)!

Lucy Goulet, in her first Spring season as Meadows Resident Service Coordinator, began Mediation Mondays with the residents at the end of February–which has continued to evolve for the residents!

“We started doing 15 min guided meditations with 6 residents in attendance, using the comfortable couch seating area in the community room,” Lucy shared.  “The residents said the meditation went by so fast, and they really enjoyed the time to be quite and reflect. Soon after we all agreed to meditate Monday and Wednesday mornings!”

Agreeing to not only up their sessions by a day a week, the residents and Lucy quickly came to the conclusion that they should increase the time to 20 minutes per session. Using a blue tooth speaker to follow guided meditation on YouTube, allowed residents to capitalize on their meditation times.

When the 20 minutes are done, the residents report feeling so much calmer and more relaxed! They have said that it just doesn’t seem to be the same meditating in their apartments on their own.  When a residents forgets about the meditation day, they feel like they really missed out on something that helps them. One resident was surprised to find herself crying…she said the peace and calm was overwhelming!”

While current attendance numbers fluctuate between four and six regular residents per session, it’s never too late to join!

“One resident wrote me a note thanking me for this opportunity and to please continue!” Lucy said. “My next goal is to offer Reiki sessions to residents who are interested!”
